Photo by @jimrichardsonng / Heather is the signature plant of the Scottish moors. It is beautiful but tough, reflecting the character of the country. Blooming in late summer, it blankets the hills in purple, as seen here in the valley of the River Dee near Braemar.
We’d been searching for perfect heather for a week. We looked on Skye, went out to Lewis and Harris, and finally came back to the Cairngorms. The next morning we got this at Mar Lodge Estate as the shaft of light came down the glen. I was in a delirious panic to capture the fleeting light, moving quickly like a fox. Landscapes in Scotland do not hold still for you but dare you to see them in their moment.
