Situated just 30 miles from Bend, Oregon is the trail that leads to this glacially eroded complex stratovolcano...say that 10 times fast. "How luxurious can winter camping really be? We left the snowmobiles at the wilderness boundary and skinned in with an embarrassing amount of gear: three packs per person, some not containing a single ounce of technical gear, instead packed with a nuclear bunker’s supply of IPA. After a bit of searching, we chose the perfect spot for base camp, Broken Top looming right in front of us. We erected the cavernous expedition tent, snapped together our sleeping tents, and went about digging a massive fire pit out of the deep snowpack. After all the logistics of the day, there wouldn't be enough daylight for an evening tour, so we spent our time carving perfect benches in the pit, and cracking into our libations ahead of schedule. As the sunset, it was time to fire up the (wait for it) portable grill. The temperature fell and we bundled up in our lofty puffies. Gathered in the pit around a crackling fire with freshly grilled sausages and hoppy beers in hand, we shared stories as the night sky fell over us, and the stars twinkled into view one by one.
