Ghost of Tanizaki is giving a special toast for @praise.shadows.art opening her gallery in Boston ! Founder, the charismatic Yng Ru Chen and I found our strong connection under Tanizaki’s spell two years ago. I am honored to show my commemorative works there in March 2011 ( TBA ) along with a powerful artist lineup.

Hello world, we are evolving. It is our absolute pleasure to announce Praise Shadows Art Gallery, a new concept and hybrid art space in the Boston area. There will be so much more to announce in the coming weeks, including more on the first exhibition by the incredible Jarrett Key (@jar.key) opening December 9.⁠

The space is a commercial exhibition venue, a shop for art books and artist-made objects at a lower price range, and a place for mentorship. We are here to serve the art lovers of Boston, the artistic community worldwide, and the artists who give us so much.⁠

The kick-off event will be a virtual artist talk with the iconic Guerrilla Girls (@guerrillagirls) on November 23 at 7 pm ET co-presented with our favorite area bookstore @brooklinebooksmith. It doesn't get more fierce than that!⁠

As Junichiro Tanizaki wrote in In Praise of Shadows (our namesake), "We find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows, the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates… Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty." We founded this gallery from within the shadows of the pandemic and social turmoil. There is, and will always, be beauty.⁠

わたしの画家活動を支えてくれている才色兼備で人情家、super lady イン・ルー・チェンがボストンでギャラリーを始めます。名だたるアーティストに並び、わたしも来年3月11日より、震災１０年を記念して個展をします。ギャラリーの名称は谷崎潤一郎の陰影礼賛の英題 #InPraiseOfShadows にちなんでいます。彼女とのカルマ的ご縁は谷崎のおかげと言っても過言ではない… 文豪もあの世から祝杯をあげてくれているでしょう。
