Photos by Michael Yamashita @Michael Yamashita / Mountains in the mist in Wulingyuan National Park, Hunan, China. This UNESCO World Heritage site is noted for having more than 3,000 sandstone pillars and peaks, many over 200 meters (660 feet) in height. It was the inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora in the blockbuster film "Avatar." The trick to photographing these pillars is to capture them during or after a rain, when the supermoist air creates foggy conditions. I photographed these mountains four times in four different seasons and only saw the fog twice, for less than an hour. Without fog, in my opinion, there is no picture. #wulingyuannationalpark #wulingyuan #zhangjiajie #avatar #hallelujahmountains
