SERENITY THROUGH SYMMETRY.

A huge black-and-white painting takes center stage on this wall at my home in Malibu. To counter the asymmetry of the artwork’s powerful graphic, I placed identical Mario Bellini chairs on either side, and chose matching Pierre Chareau light fixtures with similar material tones to the painting above the seats.

Finding the optimum balance of black against white is crucial to achieving the desired mood in a space. Too much black can feel oppressive, but too little might not create enough impact. Here, the square sconce plates add just the right amount to complement the art piece. I also combined slightly different shades and finishes of white – the subtle grain in the floor, the gloss of the chairs, the facets of the lampshades, the All White @farrowandball paint – to conjure enough visual interest while allowing the space to feel calm and serene.
