The A.C.L.U. attorney Chase Strangio has achieved a sort of celebrity as a lawyer and a trans activist in recent years. He has represented clients like Chelsea Manning, the U.S. Army whistle-blower, and Gavin Grimm, the Virginia high-school student who sued his school district for the right to use the bathroom that corresponded to his gender identity. “I want to be part of the story that trans people just are, and we live,” he said, in a conversation with Masha Gessen. “I am messy.
