We started the books at the beginning of this year and are up to book five. At the moment, they are both planning to be students from Hogwarts for Halloween. This, of course, coincides with JK Rowling’s recent remarks that have deeply offended the transgender community and I am very conflicted by how to proceed. I don’t want to support Rowling but also don’t want to deny my kids the magic of Harry Potter and completing the story. As a compromise, we’ve been discussing her remarks (Harlow actually learned about it in school which was helpful) and I’m trying to put together their costumes with mostly unbranded items. I asked for people’s opinions on my stories and I got so many thoughtful messages from all different perspectives, it was kind of a shame that I was the only one who could see them... so I wanted to open up the discussion here as well. I’ll also say that I am aware of the goblins that appear to be antisemitic caricatures, and I don’t excuse that either, but it didn’t make us stop reading the books or watching the movies. If I was going to deny myself stories due to antisemitism, I’d have to cancel all of Roald Dahl as well. Yep. Unapologetic antisemite, I just found out. So disappointing. I do draw the line at Mel Gibson, who I have canceled for the past 15 years, ever since his drunken Jew hating tirade in front of the cops. If anyone sees his new Santa movie, do not tell me about it, because my blood will boil over. So that is to say, for anyone in the transgender community who is angry that people are unwilling to let go of Harry Potter, I fully get it. Actually, that’s probably a false equivalency because I heard from many people who said Rowling’s words felt like such a betrayal because Harry Potter gave them a world as kids in which they felt included. And they had to mourn that loss. Obviously, I didn’t make any great sacrifice by giving up Lethal Weapon. Others said that Harry Potter doesn’t belong to Rowling anymore. The wizard world belongs to us. Thoughts?」10月18日 3時23分 - mommyshorts
