Famed painter José Maria Velasco celebrates his cultural heritage in this view of Oaxaca, a state located in southwestern Mexico. Taking special care to include the topography, ancient ruins, traditional costumes, and native cacti of his country, Velasco’s academic training and scientific study aided his faithful representation of a city famous for its arts and culture. In 1893 he served as the Mexican commissioner to the Chicago World’s Columbian Exchange, where he won a medal for a group of sixteen works that included a painting of this same title.
