The iconoclastic writer and scholar Saidiya Hartman occupies a singular position in contemporary culture: she is an academic who has both received a MacArthur “genius” grant and appeared in a Jay-Z video. “She’s royalty for us,” one of Hartman’s friends and collaborators said, at an event to celebrate her latest book, which blends history and fiction to chronicle the lives of young Black women in the 20th century. “We’re celebrating her, but we’re also celebrating ourselves.
