It is only by knowing the origins of European multiculturalism, explains professor Olivette Otele, that we can go beyond the clichés about diversity, heading towards a place where considering ourselves unique and therefore equal is really the norm. The greater presence of models of African origin in major fashion magazines in the past two years, driven by protests in social media and on the streets, is certainly a good thing. Yet the theme on which to focus is not the opportunities for the few gorgeous people, but the need for affirmation and consideration for the vast majority, which is not steered towards higher education, struggles to find work, and may have health problems.
