We snuggle under a crocheted throw right before we bid our nods as we each traverse into other realms held between printed pages. Yesterday’s time of it was especially hearty as winds howled and rolled outside with feet ever tucked in the hearth of a blanket’s crevice. Somewhere in the middle of our saunter through tales, the wonder child rolled over, a steady gaze waiting for me to finish my jaunt of a sentence before I turned to meet his pause. . “You have mountain in you, mom. And the prairie. And New Mexico. And some myrtle too. You have the wild in you. I hope you never change. I hope I have some mountain and the wild in me too.” . Sometimes we catch these glimpses where we see past our roles, ever needed as they are, but we have these peeks into the canyons of another being where there is no filter, no in between, no linear bounds. They seem so fleeting, these moments, and yet time pauses with eternity in the breaking of seconds. These are my most favorite of all. If I could I would dollop them into tiny bottles and wear them around my neck cherishing each clink and clank. But instead I fill my own pages dripping with the honeycomb of ink and memoir. A respite of sweet sorts, but with a purpose as well, a gift for this little one, not so little now, all for him and the wild in his heart, the mountain ever growing within his spirit and soul. . I like things that can tuck remnants and pieces neatly together yet harken the wild to make a mess of it, to explore and discover. Perhaps that is why I relish so exuberantly in journals, writing tools, pouches, slings and the like that hold it all together, that let it all loose. The containers and conduits of our mountains, our wild spaces. Our stories lived and yet to be spoken. Let them out to grow, to be wild and free. . . . . .
