Photos by Elliot Ross @elliotstudio / Shade is a precious commodity in Los Angeles, especially for commuters and people experiencing homelessness. While famous for its sun, the heat in Los Angeles can be fatal for those that can’t escape it in time. In most years in the U.S., heat kills more people than hurricanes, tornadoes or floods. Unless, more is done to mitigate heat island effects and increase shade cover, this trend is certain to become worse in the coming years. According to UCLA scientists, by the year 2050, downtown Los Angeles will experience 16 days over 95°F compared to today’s average of 4 days per year. In a city that was designed for moderate temperatures, this is a cause for concern, especially for marginalized populations.
