The elusive Kermode bear, a rare blond color morph of the American black bear, is just one of the many mammals that inhabit this region. The Great Bear Rainforest (Land Use) Order and the Great Bear Rainforest (Forest Management) Act of 2016 gave protection to 85 percent of the overall forest and 70 percent of old-growth forest. A study published recently in Ecological Solutions and Evidence found that the gene is rarer than previous estimates, and the bears’ territory is wider than first thought, expanding into areas that aren't protected. The new research findings are fundamental to conservation efforts to protect one of the last temperate rainforests in the world and the precious creatures that call it home.
