Photo by @jimrichardsonng / The rugged coastline around Mousa Broch in Shetland, shrouded under dark skies on this day, reflected the rugged life in the Iron Age. The rocky outcrops tell you where the islanders got their building material 2,000 years ago. The sandstone easily broke off into neat flagstones, perfect for building the round tower 42 feet (13 meters) high with walls 15 feet (five meters) thick at the base. Because these Iron Age people could build so easily in stone, the archaeological record in Shetland and Orkney is exceptional. Mousa is the best preserved of the more than 500 brochs that were built in the islands and northern Scotland. Anybody who was somebody wanted an impressive broch during that ambitious age.
