Photo by Karine Aigner @kaigner / Bracken Cave is home to the largest colony of Mexican free-tailed bats in the world. Each summer female bats return to the cave to have their babies. From March to October, an estimated 20 million bats roost in the enclave during the day, and each evening, the colony heads out into the into the night to individually eat their weight in insects. In the beginning, the bats will carry their newborn pups with them. As the pups get older, the mother will leave her baby hanging among thousands of others on the cave walls. When the females return at daybreak, each mother is able to find her own pup, in the dark, on the cave wall.

Each summer @batconservationinternational offers emergence viewings: the general public is able to witness 20 million bats rise into the sky in a massive spiral vortex. If you find yourself in Bracken, Texas, don’t miss it. It’s an incredible phenomenon to experience. I’ve been able to attend many times, and each time I'm reminded of the privilege to bear witness to this absolutely magnificent nature event—which happens quietly every single night in a cave on a preserved piece of land. For this reason and many others, protecting land for wildlife is a necessity. For more human wildlife stories, follow me @kaigner.
