Penguins often porpoise, swimming by jumping out of the water in rapid sequences. While this is less efficient than swimming completely submerged, it allows the penguins to breathe more often. They’re able to swim longer distances at greater speeds as a result. It also helps confuse predators. Porpoising is not a regular activity, so photographing penguins porpoising is a challenge. During my recent trip to Antarctica, we photographed this lonely Adélie penguin from our Zodiac. The trick is to focus on the penguin when it is underwater and take the shot at the exact moment its beak breaks the surface.
