#WorkoftheWeek is a self-portrait by Stanley Spencer, who believed that the secret of a good portrait was that instead of giving you something, it takes something away.

This was the artist's final self-portrait, painted five months before his death on 14 December 1959. Although seriously ill, he finished the painting in five days, working from a bedroom mirror. The portrait is on free display at Tate Britain.
