サザビーズさんのインスタグラム写真 - (サザビーズInstagram)「Narcissus, as told by our Ancient Sculpture Specialist @alexandra.olsman.sothebys: “When I was writing the catalogue note for this Roman Marble Torso of Narcissus, I went back to Ovid’s Metamorphoses to read the tale of the youth who gave us the concept of the narcissist, after he falls deeply in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. On the topic, Ovid wrote “While he desires to quench his thirst, a different thirst is created. While he drinks he is seized by the vision of his reflected form....he is astonished by himself and hangs there motionless, with a fixed expression, like a statue carved from Parian marble.” And then I thought that I obviously need to use that quote in conjunction with this uniquely beautiful torso depicting Narcissus, in marble (likely Parian tbh). The way we can tell the torso is Narcissus is by the typology: the contrapposto position, carefully modeled abdominal muscles and the bent arm. The myth of Narcissus has captivated artists beyond antiquity. The narrative of the harmfulness of self-devotion coupled with the visual trope of obsession with reflection is found in numerous interpretations with artists ranging from Caravaggio to Dali to Lucian Freud.
