Just sound it out! (Poo-oo ho-noo-uh o HO-now-now) Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park in Hawai'i is the "place of refuge at Hōnaunau." Ancient Hawai'ians maintained a system of laws that regulated things like fishing, planting, and the harvesting of resources. If a kapu (sacred law) was broken, the punishment was often death. A puʻuhonua was a fugitive's only hope for absolution. These refuges could also protect defeated warriors and civilians during times of war. Photo courtesy of Jacob W. Frank. #usinterior #Hawaii
