Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, out today, is a sprightly and vigorous adaptation of August Wilson's play, with Viola Davis portraying the eponymous musician with potent fury and ache. She is, however, ultimately a supporting player in #MaRaineyFilm. The true lead is Chadwick Boseman, who works one last wonder as the brash young coronet player Levee. "Boseman's performance is wondrously alive, one to be savored for many years," writes @rilaws in his film review.
