A creature whose fate was sealed in the Bible, this animal continues to be misunderstood. It perseveres, but due to habitat loss and mass slaughter by humans, its numbers are in decline. Rattlesnakes are incredible creatures: they not only stay with their young until their first shed, they have territories and a fascinating hunting strategy. This species is often provoked, which results in strikes and therefore sometimes death. I’ve spent hundreds of hours with them, and if we watch our own movements, they have no interest in harming us. Snakes are a necessary part of a healthy ecosystem. Deadly or not, these are some of my favorite creatures.
