“I just looked at a lot of things. ...[T]hat’s how I learnt about art, by looking at it.”
—Jean-Michel Basquiat

Born #OnThisDay in Brooklyn to a Haitian father and a mother of Puerto Rican descent, Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame in the early 1980s as part of the street graffiti scene in lower Manhattan.

Known first by the tag name SAMO ("SAMe Old shit"), Basquiat's indelible paintings and drawings showcased an extraordinarily deft hand that combined a rich range of references—including favorite pictures at #TheMet and @ブルックリン美術館—and a keen eye for the vibrant culture of the city in which he lived and worked.
