The remoteness and relative isolation of the Kalaupapa Peninsula is why the Kingdom of Hawaii designated it as a quarantine site to isolate patients suffering from Hansen’s disease (commonly known as leprosy) in 1865. The rainbow, a symbol of hope and rebirth, is the perfect representation of all that Kalaupapa has become, because ultimately it is the story of hope and rebirth in the face of crushing odds. Of science triumphing over disease and human spirit triumphing over bleakness. In the face of brutal, lifetime quarantines, the patients of the settlement created a community that has inspired me during my own COVID lockdowns and physical isolation from friends and family. I would have never guessed this image would end up in a @natgeo story when I pressed the shutter in 2006. My first assignment for National Geographic didn’t happen until 2008 and the thought of pursuing a story on Kalaupapa didn’t cross my mind until 2013.
