Once the female has produced the large and heavy egg, she has lost roughly one third of her body weight and is in desperate need for food. Access to the open ocean where she could forage however is many miles away and the walk there would be impossible with a fragile egg on her feet. In a tricky and unique maneuver, she therefore passes the egg to her male partner who will take care of it and breed the egg until she returns. The procedure is risky and once the female has carefully placed the egg on the freezing ground, the male has to pick it up quickly. Otherwise the contained embryo might freeze to death before it hatches. When we observed multiple couples during "passing season" it became quite obvious that some where quicker than others and it seemed like experience in the pass was quite crucial for a smooth exchange.
