It was a dream come true to find and photograph the legendary and beautiful fer-de-lance. This is a venomous snake of the viper family found in diverse habitats from rainforests to cultivated plantations throughout South and Central America. The fer-de-lance is a so-called pit viper, distinguished by a small sensory pit between each eye and nostril. These sensory pits allow these animals to strike prey accurately even in the absence of light, and to detect warmth from several meters away. The fer-de-lance usually relies on its superb camouflage when approached, and its bite can be fatal to humans, so it is crucial to read the individual in front of the camera and to be very sensitive and careful.
