Often, people I meet at some of these events have a reference point of climbing from something like summer camp, a birthday party (admittedly how I started climbing!) or maybe now a faint recollection of the thrills of “Free Solo.” It’s a stark reminder that places like Boulder (where I live now) are bubbles. With that, it encourages me to connect and to discuss our sport, as well as explain the importance of protecting public lands and the economy that eco tourism creates. I have hope for our country as we take on a new chapter with a new administration that ideally will patch the country back to being one. As demonstrated last week, we are living in a heartbreakingly divided time. Climbing has enabled me to cultivate a global community and unite around a common ground - a love for the outdoors and for protecting our playgrounds.
