How a Swiss Army knife made a recording possible. Okay, so we were at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio to play a CTI Records session for the great Bob James. The musicians were Bob (keys), Eric Gale (guitar), Ralph MacDonald (percussion), Grover Washington Jr. (sax), me (bass) and Harvey Mason (drums). Harvey was one of the hottest studio cats in the US at the time and was flown in from LA to do the date-so were his drums. In LA all the studio players had big anvil cases with their names stenciled on them delivered to sessions they were on, and these had just arrived from the airport out to the studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. We arrived early in the morning and saw the huge red cases with “HARVEY MASON” emblazoned on the sides. They were closed. In fact, they were locked with Harvey’s drums inside. He woulds normally have a cartage guy deliver and set up his kit before he arrived at an LA session, but in this case (no pun intended) there was no guy and no key! We weren’t going to record this groove-based song with no drums. The session might have been cancelled, BUT I was buying gadgets all the time in those days and had just purchased a Swiss Army Knife that must have had 40 blades on it. I really wanted to play with this band (and Harvey!) and had probably turned down plenty of other work to be there that morning, so I got super hardheaded and thought, “one of these 40 blades is gonna get that case open”. I tried one. And another. Another. And another. After about 25 blades I heard the magic “click” and the lock sprang open!. Here’s the result. #thisboyslife
