They only obtained the right to vote in 1965 after Congress passed the Voting Rights Act. (White women were enfranchised in 1920 by the 19th Amendment.) They earn less than White men and women — Black women are typically paid 63 cents for every dollar earned by White men, while women earn 79 cents for every dollar. Yet Black women have been the backbone of the struggle for racial and gender justice. They have organized, protested, strategized, and led the movement for equality and freedom.
