This shocking trend makes me think of the many polar bears I have photographed across the Arctic, as they are a symbol in the fight against a changing climate. This exhausted bear had to swim over 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) to reach land. As the sun was setting, it turned into a red fireball–tinted by the smoke of the boreal forest fires. The planet is undergoing extreme change from human activity, and the news about global warming has been largely overshadowed by the pandemic and politics. We are far past the point where climate change was an issue just for polar bears—now it matters to life everywhere on the planet.
