UPDATE with Biopsy Results:

This is a short(ish) summary and eventually we’ll write a blog post in more detail for anyone interested. I also want to apologize for all this health stuff lately. We’ve always tried to keep health out of our content to stay focused on entertainment, but I also know so many of you have come to care a lot about Crusoe as well..

Crusoe is doing well and is still acting like his old self, which we are so thankful for and which is always the most important thing to us.

As you know, to recap quick, Crusoe has had elevated liver enzymes for past 7 months since removing his gallbladder in June. Those enzymes were elevated in a 3-7x normal range until mid December where they doubled to 15x normal, so reluctantly and dreadfully, we made the hard decision of doing surgery again (at @cornellvet ) to take biopsies of his liver and also to flush his bile duct which was suspected of having some partial obstruction. As it turned out, his duct did have a lot of grit (tiny stones) in it. Cultures for bacteria were all negative (which is good news because infection was our main suspicion given we knew his gallbladder DID have bacteria in it). Biopsies also showed that Crusoe has (or has had) a degree of mild pancreatitis, and also - which was surprising to us - mild IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), which is suspected to be potentially from an underlying food allergy. The good news is that his liver is actually pretty good and doesn’t have a “primary” disease process going on. It’s still a bit of a messy picture because these things likely compounded together to cause his enzyme elevations, being; 1) grit in the duct causing bile to not flow as smoothly (and further aggravate pancreas), 2) IBD which can also cause liver enzymes to go up, and 3) potentially flares of pancreatitis doing same thing.

We won’t really know if there’s been an improvement to his enzymes until we do another blood test in next couple weeks. We HOPE the flushing of the duct will yield at least SOME improvement, and we will also likely be trying a hypoallergenic diet to see if that can calm the IBD and secondarily reduce liver enzymes further.

Thank you all for all the love
