Remember...crowds? It's safe to say no one remembers them quite as well as #MonaLisa.⁣

On February 4, 1963, after a stop at @ngadc, she arrived at The Met as a loan from @ルーブル美術館, thanks to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who made a request to the French government that the painting visit the United States. ⁣

Unveiled to the public three days later, New York City's then-mayor Robert Wagner remarked at the ceremony: "I welcome to the City of New York one of the most beautiful tourists we are ever likely to have. On behalf, too, of the eight million people of New York City, I bespeak the delight and excitement that her arrival has brought to us all."⁣

Delight and excite she did. During her three-and-a-half week stay, more than one million people were able to catch a glimpse of #LaGioconda. ⁣

📸 A crowd waits in line in the Medieval Sculpture Hall to see the Mona Lisa (on view February 7–March 4, 1963). Sunday, February 10, 1963, 3 pm. #TheMet #tbt⁣
