The ancient rite, that researchers relate to cult of the goddess Angizia or to the cult of the saint, has its roots in peasant life and in the pastoral toil of the transhumance, continually threatened by poisonous snakes. In ancient times, coming to Cocullo and placing on the neck of children the darting and ambiguous head of the snakes meant to foretell them against the risk of future evils, as reported by the anthropologist Alfonso di Nola. The rite still exists, despite being a shepherd is today an exception.
