I live on this 3,000 acre campus and am out photographing most mornings. The photos here are from a series on cypress knees. I grew up exploring the woods and swamps around my small town in North Carolina and was always fascinated by cypress knees. I’m still growing up and still fascinated by cypress knees these many, many years later. The woody projections that sprout above water level from the roots of bald cypress trees are an enigma. For two hundred years, botanists have proposed many theories about the purpose of cypress knees and all have been disproved. We still do not know what they are for. The birds who live around this Sweet Briar lake use the knees as a convenient perch. Full disclosure….I put out seeds for the birds in winter.」2月9日 13時35分
