My family. Their love still carries me from across the seas. A deviation from journals perhaps, and yet the echos of generations that lend poetry to my heart and inspiration to the ink splayed in pages. They are in it all. Happy Lunar New Year from my family to yours. 새해 복 많이 받으세요!

My grandfather 할아버지 named me Mi-Sook with the meaning Beautiful Lady because I was the only grandchild that didn’t run around screaming and jumping off of things. He thought I was much like a little old lady, which tickled his heart and would make him laugh. The first English words he ever spoke were to me, which he had practiced for weeks in order to impress me. 😭 Ours was a bond at first hug. Whenever we visited him, I would sit beside him and hold his hand and every now and then he would squeeze it tight to let me know his joy and his love too. His last words spoken were for me.

I am asked often about my heritage. Yes, I am mixed, though I don’t feel like getting into my full family ancestry for a social media post. I am proud of where I come from. The stories of my family and ancestors are woven into my bones. My family, especially in South Korea, have never made me feel mixed. I am whole and I am multi-faceted. I love who I am and where I come from. It took me some time before I could say that, even when I felt it. It’s good to embrace who you are and the roots you have. Wishing all beings out there so much goodness in every facet of life. May all that flourishes you be yours. May you live well. 새해 복 많이 받으세요!
