During pregnancy I had tried to remain open to every possibility but still I had an ideal birth in mind : at home, in the water, with my favorite music playing, surrounded by my love @tommy.clarke and my midwife. It was like this for a while but 12 hours and a sleepless night later, when my midwife told me that I was barely 3 cm dilated I felt hopeless and beyond exhausted. I had wanted a homebirth because I wanted more than anything to be able to listen to my body freely, and at that point, what my body was telling me was that it needed a rest - and thus we went for plan B, which was the hospital. After the longest 15 min car ride of my life, we finally arrived, and about an hour later, I was in a birth room with the epidural I had said I didn’t want. The pain relief allowed me to relax and to sleep for a bit, and a few hours later I started feeling the strong need to push. Half an hour later, our baby boy came out naturally. Although giving birth didn’t go as I’d planned, it couldn’t have been a more positive experience. Because what really mattered in the midst of it all didn’t have anything to do with whether I was at home in the water or on a bed at the hospital. It had everything to do with who was surrounding me. It was a positive experience because throughout it all I had people that were caring, supportive and attentive. It was a positive experience because every step of the way I felt like I had a choice - the choice of changing my mind and wanting some medical help for example - and that the people around me were respecting that choice. So if I had one advice for mamas to be, it would be : 1/ Document yourself and learn as much as possible about childbirth, about how to manage the intensity of contractions, about the different pain relief options, about the different delivery methods etc 2/ Surround yourself with kindly people ( and even if you can’t predict who is going to be in charge at the hospital the day you’re going into labor, trust that there are wonderful midwives, doctors and nurses out there ) 3/ Know that it’s your body, your baby, your story and therefore, you should always have the choice.」2月13日 0時18分 - sigridagren
