It's Black History month, which means it's an excellent time for parents to introduce children's books about significant Black figures in history to their kids. There are tons of Black thought leaders, politicians, scientists and inventors who are often overlooked when our kids study American history in school. It’s also important to introduce the concept of slavery, especially as it pertains to the current racial injustices in America. If that sounds too heavy, don't worry. There are plenty of books out there that do a great job at introducing these concepts in an age appropriate way. Personally, I have always filled my kids' shelves with books about Black History, but this month, I made a point of taking them all out and stacking them on our coffee table where my kids would be more likely to pick them up and read them again. There are books that I have been reading to Harlow for years and more recently, she is processing things more fully and asking big questions. And I have to say, I think Harlow’s teacher was very impressed when she recognized a photo of George Washington Carver at school!
