Dreaming of spring with "Crow on a plum branch," from Ogata Gekkō's series "Twelve bird-and-flower prints."

Crows are a symbol of good luck in Japan, while the plum blossom is a harbinger of spring and believed to be a protective charm against evil.

Gekkō, who was self-taught, was one of the earliest Japanese artists to have an international audience. This 1899 woodblock print of his is in our @freersackler's collection.
