Rwina means chaos in darija and is also the only way to describe the many regions/dialects in Morocco and all the beautiful music that came from that rich diversity. And despite all the differences within those micro communities and their specific languages/traditions/sounds on Friday and Saturday night they all came together on satellite television or parabol as we call it where we all would sit in front of the tv and watch live mesra7iat on 2M that lasted hours and had all the iconic artists perform their music. It didn’t matter whether you could speak sel7a, riffia or soussia all that mattered was singing and dancing along because at some point nobody was on the couch and we all would be in the middle of the sala with someone grabbing a derboeka from the attic or using whatever furniture of cutlery that was within reach as an instrument.
