It’s World Bear Day! 🐻 Enjoy this sweet video of orphaned sun bear cubs Shannon and Buddy playing during a daily forest release several years ago at OFI’s Care Centre.

While orangutans are our main focus, OFI has also rescued dozens of sun bears - the world’s smallest bear and the only bear species found in Borneo - from the illegal pet trade, substandard zoos, and the bear bile industry (harvesting gallbladders for purported medicinal uses) over the years. Before Buddy was confiscated by Indonesian Forestry officials & @jakartaanimalaidnetwork and brought to our Care Centre, the people keeping him as a pet removed his claws, robbing him of any hope of surviving on his own in the wild. But Buddy hasn’t let his lack of claws get him down! He is full of life and enjoys a large forested enclosure at our Care Centre. Shannon, on the other hand, was transferred to one of our remote forest camps in 2018 for a “soft release.” She was monitored by camp staff and provided with food, water, and a sleeping enclosure for as long as she wanted. Eventually, Shannon disappeared into the great forest 💛
