Halloween 2022 was way better than 2021. With the help of YOU. The fulcrums of mental health and happiness are tenuous in our house at best, and Halloween brought an inclusive overture of joy. With the help of a little Facebook “primer” post, a primer sign on the stroller, Grace got the love and attention that I think she deserves. Was it hard to see kiddos younger than Grace running circles around her stroller? Hell yea. But the encounters that we were lucky to have last night brought the world a step closer to making exclusivity an erstwhile concept. A mom asked if her boys could take a picture with Grace next to the large skeleton. A nice father came by with a special goody bag made just for Grace. People glanced at the stroller sign, sang for her, danced for her and even came down to her level and said hello; which promoted her million watt smiles. As she gets older, people will be more abjectly aware of her disabilities. I hope… with the hope of all hopes… that people will be kind to Grace and not judge by the exterior incongruity of her wheelchair or feeding bag. I hope people will take more than a moment to sit with Grace and be patient enough to learn that she loves when you sing and clap her hands for her. I hope that YOU will lean into the discomfort of greeting someone who is different and teach your littles that the right way is not to look the other way. I wish there was a blueprint for action. But all it takes to start is a simple “hello.”

I wish there was a blueprint for action. But all it takes to start is a simple “hello.”
