Have you ever given thought to why society is taught to look away and basically ignore the disabled? I never have until I was faced with it in my family.

Sleep often eludes me and deep dives into cyberspace have unearthed why we were taught to look the other way instead of leaning in. I learned that nearly 100 years ago a chairman of Eugenics (the science of improving the human race) claimed that every “defective” man, woman and child is a burden. That they are one extra body for a nation to feed, clothe and take care of and get nothing in return. In the interest of “improving the human race”, people with disabilities were segregated, hidden and disregarded. Thus, a culture of ignorance was born around a set of people who occupy the same society that you live in.

The only burden of being disabled are the shortcomings of society — like a physical environment that isn’t accessible. For example, a non wheelchair accessible establishment sends a message that disabled people are not welcome.

I’ve had to fight my own ableist views since Grace became ill and will continue to do so probably forever. But I can actively try to turn my perspective around while trying to improve the uncultivated moor that disability sits upon. You can too by simply explaining to your curious kiddo that “he uses a feeding tube. Some people use their mouth like you do and others eat through their stomach.” Simple. Direct. Honest.

You being here—reading these words, slowing down a bit to empathize with others—thank you for being in our corner and learning with us. Maybe sometime in the future, our kids kids will be the ones to unravel and squash the stigma within disability. I hope together, we can sew inclusion like a seed and watch it take root in others. Maybe one day disability will be viewed as simply being human.
