ジェーン・パークさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ジェーン・パークInstagram)「The Robert Cox Trophy was donated by Robert Cox of Scotland who was a member of British Parliament and a course designer. It’s the longest serving original USGA trophy having first been presented in 1896. I had the honor of winning this gorgeous piece of hardware as a 17yo. It is encrusted with thistles, surmounted in plaid enamel and inlayed with cairngorm gemstones. I was teased and bullied for playing golf in high school. It was considered an old man sport back then. After my win, senior year began and I didn’t speak a word of my accomplishment to the other students. I get called out of class on the INTERCOM into the principals office. I thought I was in trouble, but hardly was the type to cause any. Being called out like this in front of my peers was humiliating! I was so uncool already. I nervously walked into his office and he invited me to have a seat. Here’s how the conversation went: P: Your name is Jane and you play golf? Me: yep P: that’s so funny… there’s another girl named Jane Park who won the U.S. Women’s Amateur this summer and she lives in Rancho Cucamonga too. Me: …… After speaking for a bit, a lightbulb went off in his head and he couldn’t believe it was me. He was a huge golf fan and was SO DANG PROUD to have me in his school. He suggested bringing the trophy in and displaying it in the front office lobby and I could feel my cheeks go flush from the embarrassment. It was displayed in view of his office window and he loved marveling at it. Students that walked by could not give a crap about it. The principal then did a video collage of my win that aired in every class on Monday. I could have died of embarrassment. Only a few years later did I realize it was my honor to have held this trophy in my possession for a year and that I should be nothing but proud. With names like Babe Zaharias, Louis Suggs, Beth Daniel, Juli Inkster just to name a few - to have my name permanently etched on that piece of history is something I will always look back on fondly.
