That heather is so predominant on the Highland moors is not entirely natural; it's also the result of a couple of centuries of managing the land for the maximum production of grouse. Estates depend on grouse for a fair bit of their income, and grouse, whose numbers climb in areas where there is more heather, were a prime draw of the estate system in the first place. Mar Lodge is one of the estates actively trying to rebalance the ecosystem, looking at ways to bring back more trees to the Highlands. The old stump is symbolic of that loss of trees where Caledonian pine forests once stood.
