"Becoming a mother broke me open in a way that I hadn't been before."

Audra McDonald (@audramcdonald), winner of a record six Tonys, two Grammys and an Emmy, spoke to TIME about parenthood.

"As an industry, we need to make it easier for women to be able to be parents and be pregnant," McDonald says. "And have this space to be pregnant without being punished for it or ostracized for it."
