I often get comments saying that Tokyo is one of the loneliest places they have ever been, kind of like the movie Lost in Translation. Just crowds of silent people minding their own business.

I do hear them, but I feel the complete opposite.

It is exactly Tokyo’s perceived aloofness that liberated me from feeling sorely forlorn. It is exactly in Tokyo’s chaos that I found peaceful quietude. It is exactly the ubiquitous solitude that made me realize that human connection isn’t all there is to be whole.

And actually, the part being silent together with complete strangers is one aspect that I value the most. That’s what you do when you go to a zazen meditation hall, or in the mizuburo at a local sento. But then again maybe I’m just one of those who enjoy self inflicted ordeals in silence, which, ironically, is actually just solace seeking.

I remember taking the Yamanote Line back home in a crowded train. Silence filled the air. Raindrops lined the windows. And I thought to myself: this is exactly what I have been dreaming about.

Tokyo’s loneliness is so, so beautiful and comforting. I don’t think I could have come this far without it.

In this city, we are all separately together.

Maybe it’s just me.
