【Akita’s hunter-gatherer】

Are you familiar with “matagi”?

I first heard of it from the anime “Golden Kamuy”, featuring a matagi from the Ani region of Akita.

Deeply rooted in the Tohoku region, the matagi represents Japan’s original hunter-gatherer traditional, a way of life that has sustained itself for centuries. These individuals primarily subsist by hunting bears and foraging for mountain vegetables.

The matagi’s existence is defined by a profound connection with nature, emphasizing a harmonious coexistence with the environment and the practice of sustainable hunting.

I am so deeply fascinated with this traditional culture that I have made repeated journeys to the northern regions of Akita, each visit deepening my understanding.

Meeting and trekking alongside Oriyama san, a matagi who also runs a guest house, @oriyamake gives valuable insights into the essence of being a matagi.
