San’in consists of 2 prefectures in the north: Tottori and Shimane facing the Sea of Japan, while Sanyo is home to Yamaguchi, Hiroshima and Okayama in the south along the Seto Inland Sea. Interestingly, the naming San’in and Sanyo literally means “shady mountain” (山陰) and “sunny mountain” (山陽), representing the yin and yang respectively. True enough, San’in area is often mysteriously misty, whereas Sanyo area is blessed with lots of sunshine.
