Knock knock!
For #BlackHoleWeek, @NASAHubble is checking out the home of a black hole about 10,000 times the mass of our Sun. This galaxy, NGC 4395, is known as a Seyfert galaxy, a type of galaxy with a very bright core. However, NGC 4395 is one of the dimmest known Seyfert galaxy.
The cores of Seyfert galaxies are so bright because supermassive black holes at their cores devour materials that get too close, releasing radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum.
Image Description:
A Hubble image of a galaxy in space. Millions of stars cover the entire image, except most of them are so small they look like glitter thrown across a canvas. The stars are all shades of blues, purples, and pinks. In the bottom left is a bright white circle, the core. Slightly above the core is a particularly bright orange-ish white star that has four diffraction spikes.
