In 1911 the forest around the lake was designated a protected area, protecting its trees and the myriad species—mushrooms, lichens, moss, snails, beetles, mammals—that make a home there. Many of these species thrive on dead wood, which in primeval forests can make up about a third of the wood total. Biologist Nicole Ottawa and photographer Oliver Meckes, the co-founders of Eye of Science, collected samples of earth from this part of the Black Forest and documented them in their lab using a scanning electron microscope.
