The former President could potentially face a prison sentence of around 20 years, if convicted in the Espionage Act case against him.
The sentence could involve 17-and-a-half to 22 years for retaining national security documents, and an additional seven-and-one-quarter to nine years for other counts, including obstruction of justice, according to former federal prosecutor David Aaron.
That 20 years-ish range shows just how much trouble Trump is in. Mind you, as there's no historic precedent for charging a US President with the kind of serious felonies he's accused of, nobody knows for sure what would happen in the event of a guilty verdict.
Some legal experts expect Trump to be sentenced to some kind of home confinement, or possibly a special facility designated just for him. And if he wins the 2024 presidential election, he could even attempt to pardon himself — although Constitutional scholars say it’s unclear whether he could actually pull that off.
